GF means Gourmet Food

Gluten-free Backlash?  Did we call it in 2008 or what?   http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/gluten-free-diet-helpful-23789144

_________________________________

Believe it or not, the hottest upcoming trend in handbags is GF and I don't mean Gucci and Fendi.

The fashionesta swear by the newest tilt in food fads--GF. The well dressed won't be caught this season without their Prada stocked with gluten-free salad dressing and GF soy sauce. It's the newest fashion accessory to follow the trend.

Jeff Ruby of Chicago magazine states, "Ten years ago, few people other than nutritionists even knew what gluten was. Now it’s gluten-free this and gluten-free that, and, frankly, we didn’t even know we were enslaved."

But enslaved we are, to the turn of fashion and for right now, the spotlight is on GF (gluten-free is gourmet food--with gourmet prices) In October, Alexis Christophorus on CBS announced that 86% of all new items introduced at this years Consumer New Product Food Convention were gluten free!

It's great to be on the front line of the GF craze. Even if it is just the newest, latest fad 'cause that means lots more research and development money and I'm benefiting.

But be warned, fads are fads, and this can't last, but until then, when your condiment ziplock springs a leak, consider it just another small sacrifice for fashion.

Science Proves No Benefit For GF Dieters

The following article is an interesting read and I had to peruse it just to find my own truth.

Science lacking for need for gluten free diet?

http://www.bakingbusiness.com/articles/news_home/Trends/2012/08/Science_seen_lacking_for_glute.aspx?ID={A77637C9-F272-4E0B-8C54-3D9AA6565135}&e=tdadee@sbcglobal.net

My take on it is that so many people are finding success with the gf diet that the wheat producers (by whom this scientist is paid) are running a little scared.

Wall Street GF Article

The Feb 7 2012, Wall Street Journal article on Gluten Confusion promises to separate the Facts from the Buzz. It only serves to conflict and confuse me more.

It concludes that people who are only gluten sensitive and not celiac can eat small quantities of gluten occasionally without problems.

Um... in my discussions with people of the entire gluten spectrum my findings are that this disease is cumulative and persons who were once only sufferers of gluten sensitivities like DH are now full-blown celiacs with compounded symptoms. (my first cousin)

Individuals who tested negative for CD all their lives, (my kids) are now, as young adults suffering the full blown effects (perhaps worse for not being diagnosed and diet effected early).

Individuals who have no symptoms (including the biopsy) but show up as positive for CD in their blood should go on the diet or risk acquiring other auto immune diseases like lupus and Crohn's (my two sisters).

I do agree with the last section who quotes Cynthia Kupper from GIG who seems to conclude that if the diet works, DO IT!

And lastly, doctors who presume to diagnose disease based on inaccurate disease indicators shouldn't be the least bit surprised when their disease is managed by the populace of sufferers outside of their control.

Articles for the New Year #1

The Liberated Kitchen (based in Portland Oregon) has just recently put out an interesting and informative (with many related links) 5-part series on Celiac. The five parts are:

Celiac Testing Myth #1 – No Symptoms = No Celiac
Celiac Testing Myth #2 – Go Gluten-Free First
Celiac Testing Myth #3 – Gluten-Free 4 Life = No Reason to Test
Celiac Testing Myth #4 – Doctor Knows Best
Celiac Testing Myth #5 – DNA = Proof

Venus Has Sjogrens... Hmmm?

As you all know, Sjogrens is yet another related auto immune disease. Here is a follow up article to the information coming out about Venus Williams.

Again, struggling to answer the age old question, why so much auto-immune disease?

Gluten Causing Epidemics?

40% of American's can't tolerate gluten? Gluten-intolerance is an epidemic in Europe? This article blames Monsanto for gluten intolerances. Intriguing? GMO genetically modified has made America ill? I wonder. If it's true, we probably will not hear any more about it as Monsanto will buy the cover-up.

Hey, a little healthy conspiracy theory mixed with a recent viewing of Food, Inc. and who knows what I might mix up in my little chemically-altered brain.

GO GF and excel in Sports?

Need more Evidence of the GF Diet improving Athletic Performance?

My husband (the marathoner) brought to my attention an article in July's Outside magazine about athletes improving their performance by eating a g-f diet. It is not yet available online, (that I can find) but I will post the link when it becomes available.

Seems that athletes who suffer from a gluten intolerance or celiac disease find their performance improved when they follow a g-f diet.

YAY! Once more, evidence for me to use to convince the husband that he too can benefit from sticking to the diet that the rest of the family are already on! And, if you recall, he does have the g-intolerance gene--yet no symptoms.

Honey, are you reading this? This is the guy who has the t-shirt that says, "More people have read this T-Shirt than have read my wife's blog."

Yeah, I'm still laughing after 30 years. Happy Anniversary Honey.

Gluten Free FDA Labeling

This is an interesting article about the FDA and it's struggle to define the label gluten-free.

Wish I were in Washington DC tomorrow to eat a piece of that gluten-free cake. Might just have to make my own in commemoration.

Brenda Watson ND CNC

I have watched Brenda Watson on PBS often and I really enjoy her perceptions of good food and healthy eating. I recently went on her blog and found that there are two tests that this specialist recommends for intestinal problems.

I find it interesting that she says one of them is a gluten test. In her practice she finds so many patients with gluten issues that she quotes: "Seriously folks, more than 40 percent of Americans are gluten sensitive and most don’t even know it, and 2 million of those have a serious autoimmune disorder called celiac disease, which causes the body to try to attack gluten in the system.

Gluten FREEDOM at Disney

Gluten free at Disney?

Here is the second response from my contact with the website: P.S. Disney characters do not eat as there are no free images online of them with food. I guess it would be awkward to show Robin Hood snacking on Thumper.

National Institute of Health Newsletter

FYI here is the latest issue of the NIH's Celiac Awareness Letter which came about when somebody there figured out that at our current rate of acceleration, (1 celiac to every 637 humans in 1950 up to now, 1 in 137) we will be a pandemic soon. And the government had better pretend that they had a handle on it way back when.

So here it is, the latest and greatest governmental studies that you wish you had thought of first and gotten funding for:

Wall Street Journal Article on Gluten

Interesting and comprehensive article to wake up to. My only complaint was that the article did not discuss the expense of eating GF. For a financial paper like the Wall Street Journal, that seemed to me to be a glaring omission.

I'm not one of the celiac type that loses weight going off gluten, although I personally know of those who shed 50 to 80 pounds in months of following the diet. It seems like a strange happenstance when this occurs, but then I remember, 30% of celiacs are overweight, 39% are obese.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703846604575447413874799110.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

If I wanted to lose weight without exercise, I could diet by going off the diet, but then being too thin would be the least of my problems.
